Friend or Foe: ChatGPT use in College Courses
Workshop presented at the University of West Georgia, March 15, 2023

Abstract:

The recent introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, has created challenges as well as opportunities for institutions regarding adoption of such tools as an integral part of the organization's mission. In order to make informed decisions about use of AI it is important to understand and debate how (or whether) AI can be implemented in the higher education curriculum.

The goal of this workshop is to provide an overview of the capabilities and potential uses of advanced AI language models like ChatGPT, and how these tools can be leveraged to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of classroom instruction, research, and administrative tasks. The workshop will allow participants to get hands-on experience with sample prompts that can help harness the power of ChatGPT for teaching and learning.

Following the hands-on portion of the workshop, participants will discuss issues related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education such as ethics, plagiarism, pedagogy, policies and AI literacy when using AI tools. We will share and discuss ideas on how to help prepare UWG students for the future by creating an environment that leverages technology while encouraging authentic ideas and authorship.
